Every consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to be free from discrimination, coercion, harassment and sexual, financial or other exploitation.

Dignity and Independence - Tu Tangatira Motuhake

Every Consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to services provided in a manner that respects the dignity and independence of the individual.

Proper Standards - Tautikanga

Every consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to have services provided with reasonable care and skill.

Effective Communication - Whakawhitiwhitiinga Whakaaro

Every Consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to effective communication in a form, language and manner that allows the consumer to understand the information provided.  Where necessary and practical, this includes the right to a competent translator.

Information - Whakamohio

Every Consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to receive information.

Your Choices and Decisions - Whakaritenga Mou Ake

Every Consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to make an informed choice and be given sufficient information to make an informed decision.

Support - Tautoko

Every Consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to one or more support persons of their choice present.

Rights During Teaching and Research - Ako Me Te Rangahau

Every Consumer/Tangata Whai Ora is covered by the Code of Rights when they are participating in or being proposed to participate in teaching and research.

Have Your Complaints Taken Seriously - Amuamu
Every Consumer/Tangata Whaiora has the right to make a complaint about the service they have received.

Many organisations in the mental health sector have in place 'Consumer Participation' Policies.  These define expectations of the consumer on how everyone should work in partnership to achieve the best possible outcomes.
